After 2NE1 disbanded, fans all over the world have been patiently waiting for the members to take their rightful place in the spotlight. Wondering what’s happening to CL? Lately, the Queen of Kpop has been dealing with a big loss and making a name for herself in both music and fashion.

CL is one of the charismatic pioneers that paved the way for Kpop’s worldwide explosion. After the former member of 2NE1 left the group, fans have been hungry for her comeback in music.

The Kpop superstar debuted as a part of 2NE1 in 2009 under YG Entertainment. The girl group was one of the biggest Kpop trailblazers due to their one of a kind style – a far cry from the usual stereotypical feminine Kpop groups. The group disbanded in 2016, and CL left her label in 2019 to pursue her solo career.

Wondering what’s keeping CL busy today? We’ve rounded up what the Kpop superstar is up to lately.

CL for Johnnie Walker

When people think of whisky, Johnnie Walker is one of the first brands that come to mind. This is why it’s just apt for the company to tap one of the biggest Kpop superstars for their “Keep Walking” campaign in the Asian market.

The campaign is part of the brand’s Walkers program where they showcase creative individuals all over the world who exemplify their philosophy, and CL’s journey in becoming a global star and overcoming prejudice when she broke out as a solo artist is a prime reflection of that. Johnnie Walker featured how she ranked in the Billboard Top 100 list in two campaigns.

“I’ve always hoped that by forging new paths, breaking down cultural barriers, and challenging stereotypes, I could inspire others to never feel constrained by their background or the status quo they see in the world around them,” shared the artist.

Her Mother’s Loss

CL’s mother passed away early this year at the age of 53, and fans of the rapper/singer were shocked and swiftly expressed their sympathy to their idol. CL’s mother died due to cardiac arrest while residing overseas.

Losing a mother is one of the hardest parts of life, and it’s clear that CL is still dealing with her loss. CL has thanked her fans and supporters on her Instagram.

“Thank you for giving me light during one of the most difficult times of my life, with all of your kind words and the outpouring of love,” she wrote, adding that her mother is the bravest, most selfless, and giving person she knows. She also said her mother will continue to live through her because of everything she has taught her. The Kpop star also asked her mother to watch over her and her beloved sister.

Last February, CL released a new track on her 30th birthday entitled “Wish You Were Here” that is dedicated to her mother. The relaxed track features very personal lyrics like “cause it’s been 6 months since I last saw you but I hope you’re okay, can’t believe you went from mother to angel in the space of a day.”

She also dropped a music video that shows family footage, photos, and home videos from her trainee days and experience with 2NE1.

German Magazine Cover

CL became the first-ever Korean artist to be on the cover of 032c, a magazine based in Germany. The Kpop superstar joined the likes of Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, and Tom Cruise who also shared the same feat. The magazine is known for its contemporary take on politics, fashion, and art.

The magazine talked about the rap queen’s journey with 2NE1 and maintaining her dominance in the industry.

CL is now preparing for the launch of +ALPHA+, her album that was supposed to be launched last year but was postponed. The rapper/singer also signed to be a producer for “Super Band 2,” a survival program on JTBC.
